What is your background? tell us where you grew up and some information about your upbringing/experiences as a youth:
Lil TaRus, born April 20, 1990, is a self-made artist born and raised in Houston Texas. His origin of North Houston has provided him with the Drive and Passion for showing the world what H-Town has to offer! Whether it was his time in Acres Homes, Greens point or Cypress, Lil TaRus has been all over and experienced a lot. His life has been the driving force behind his music even at the early age of 3 when he became interested in music. Music has been a part of his life for 20+ years, Writing, Producing and Recording his first song at age 8 and recording his first major studio single at 17. Raised by a single mother, Lil TaRus draws inspiration from his family and the everyday trials and tribulations he has been through. Growing up around the Music Industry watching his uncle Tay and Houston Native Slim Thug who was like an uncle to him, Lil TaRus has experienced the changes of the Hip-Hop & Rap Industry pushing him to stay to his old school, authentic style including new style techniques. Just being around artists gave him the inspiration he needed to jump into his music head first, including Open Mic Nights with Wickett Cricket. Lil TaRus has always had the Passion, Dedication, and Determination to make something of his self and help those around him. He created his first company, Royal Prodigy Entertainment which handles his Photography and Cinematography. Knowing all sides of the Industry is a vital part of being successful so education is key. He is currently working on his first full studio album which is set to be released early 2k17. No matter the outcome of his dreams, Lil TaRus prides himself on staying humble and remembering where he came from, with that failure isn’t an option.
At what moment, did you know that music was part of your life and what feelings did you have towards making an active impact with your music?
Music has always been part of my life as long as long as I can think back, I had a idea at age 3. I knew that one day I wanted to do something with music, just didn’t know what or how I would. From growing up watching my uncles in the studio so young to joining band in the 6th grade. Music would be my escape. Not knowing what was going on during those sessions, being such a curious kid I made it a game to remember what I saw. As I got older, the memories returned, the questions started and at Age 7 I was on a mission with a clear vision of what I wanted. I was hopeful on having a strong impact with my music, I feel it tells a story with real feeling to it. The energy that connects us all!
What artists inspired/influences you and if you could collaborate with any artist (alive or passed) who would it be and why?
The artists I would collaborate with would have to be, Kid Cudi, Eminem and Wiz Khalifa. Their music has always inspired me on different levels. From dark times in my life to the better ones, they got me thru it. Kid Cudi got me thru it all more on a personal level. Eminem and Cudi both hold my number one spot overall. Cudi top spot on a personal impact level. Anything Wiz puts me in a good mood, what more of a reason do I need. Happiness is the Goal!
What do you think about the current state of hip hop/mainstream music?
Music is an art, who’s to say what is good or isn’t. If just one other person likes it, and bring self joy I can rock with the grind and I support the hustle. Can’t ever knock the grind. I personally feel it’s not enough mainstream with substance. We need more in this era.
Currently, what projects do you have in the works that you are most excited about?
I currently have my single “Right Nah” out now everywhere! On the upcoming album “No Problems in Life”. Singles “Turn It Up” is a bit of a pop rap twist, featured on the album “No Problems in Life”. “We in This” is a Trap sound from Down South. “Victory Song” Give a message with a nice flow. All song on the Album are available everywhere. Album set to be released early 2k17.
What are your short-term career goals within the next 6-10 months?
I hope to have a consistent flow of booked shows lined up. Increase promotion runs. Time to build the core. This year was a good run, now it’s time to increase and push even harder. Not about what I did last week but how much I did with results this week.
What are your long-term career goals within the next 2-5 years?
In the next 2 to 5 years I hope to start my next company. Went a few artists on roster, management and publishing are important. Take my music to the next level. Matter of time before they know who Lil TaRus is.
If you had one song out of the catalogue you have created to show a person what song would it be and why?
It would have to be my hot new single “Right Nah”. Taste of new flavor to get your body moving and your mind thinking. The way it’s suppose to be. Flava!
To the person who had never heard of you what is it about your music and story that you would tell them to entice them to be a supporter?
If you believe music is a powerful tool, can move you, take you away from everything and even help concur those then let’s take that journey. If you don’t like the music you will at least respect the message.
If your music could be described in five words what would those five words be?
Unique, Energizing, Motivational, Explosive, Just COOL.
What do you bring to the game that is unique and different?
With the current era of music, it seems diverse with different styles and sounds. I bring to the game a sense of the new school with substance like the Old. Substance I feel could be missing now and I hope to add to the List of Top MCs. All I want to do is work, so if I don’t break down the door with talent, I’ll jump thru the window with my work ethic. #sleepforwhat
To the aspiring artist who is considering a career as a musician what lessons or advice would you give them to inspire them or to uplift them in the journey?
Get everything in writing and never look down on anyone. Those same ones could be over you one day. Stay Humble, Grateful, but Starving in other words. If it’s what you love and are passionate about, it will happen. Patience is a skill to master, once you do the possibilities are endless.
